Justice, it is said, must not only be done, it must be seen to be done (Homi K. Bhabha)
JUST SITUATIONS is a hybrid conference, festival, and “political science fair,” hosting artists and active citizens who are working in performative ways, moving beyond the trending commercialization of art “about” politics, into non-representational and non-reproductive modes of performance which directly construct, speculate, design. position, and posit “just” forms of political, social, and personal human being and becoming.
JULY 14, 15, 16, 17 & JULY 20, 21, 22, 23, 2017 in BROOKLYN, NY
THURSDAY, JULY 13 (@PPL)
Day One: Situation Room
We live in states of triage and embattlement, how do we strategize, convene, plan, and devise tactics? How do we experience the affects of this perpetual situation room?
6pm-8pm: convention welcome potluck
FRIDAY, JULY 14 (@PPL)
Day Two: Survival is An Art
Demonstrations of personal fortitude and ability, dealings with “natures” for art and the health of the art-making mindbody, transformations of the personal through time
SATURDAY, JULY 15 (@Grace Exhibition Space)
Day Three: Embodied Politics
How directly do we make political situations? What are the implications of our ways of thinking, seeing, moving, and being? How are we orbiting, channeling, tunneling, magnetizing as political, social, and spiritual agents?
Tal Beery/the School of the Apocalypse
7pm-ongoing throughout evening (site specific):
SATURDAY, JULY 15 (@PPL)
2pm-8pm: David Ian Bellows/Griess
SUNDAY, JULY 16 (@Grace Exhibition Space)
Day Four: (Meta)physical Manifestation
Laws, conceptions, and formal ways-of-seeing emerge from action and intra-action: how are conditions installed, reformed, revised? What forms of agency do we have, and how are these realized?
SUNDAY, JULY 16 (@PPL)
David Ian Bellows/Griess
THURSDAY, JULY 20 (site TBD)
Day Five: Reading Conditions
What are the elements of “a situation”? How do we inscribe, read into, interpret, and mark our world(s)? Abstraction, social magnetics, communication, and forms of semiotic transparency perform “reads” of our conditions, backgrounds, ethics, and ideals.
FRIDAY, JULY 21 (@Grace Exhibition Space)
Day Six: Moving between manifesto and manifestation
Negative, negating, and deconstructive efforts are compared and contrasted with “utopian” planning and construction of “ideal,” “positive” and “intentionally situated” contexts and conditions
SATURDAY, JULY 22 (@Grace Exhibition Space)
Day Seven: Taking Sides
Where do we stand? How do we balance belonging and inclusion with resistance and divestment? How do we move together with respect for difference and diffraction? For whom and what do we stand up?
Lorene Bouboushian Part I (workshop)
